The Best Theme Cruises of 2017

by Fran Golden | December 19, 2016

Looking for a cruise that really matches your interests and personality? On theme cruises, you sail with passengers who are also drawn by shared interests and participate in activities that are tailored just for you and your love of music, or racing, or knitting ... or whatever floats your boat. (Sorry, we couldn't help ourselves!)

There's a theme cruise for just about everyone: The themes range from the popular to the sublime to the, well, kind of bizarre, and they tend to take place on shorter sailings on older ships, often in the Caribbean. Our list of the best theme cruises of 2017 includes some well-known annual sailings as well as some brand new concepts. (Cannabis cruise, anyone?)

Read on to find your perfect sailing.

Star Trek: The Cruise
Embarks: January 9, 2017

Norwegian Pearl
Western Caribbean
Boldly cruise where no cruiser has gone before on this six-day sailing, the first-ever officially licensed Star Trek cruise. It's hosted by William Shatner himself, and other actors from the franchise's TV shows and movies will be onboard, too. Trekkies (or should we say trekkers?) will find opportunity to mingle in costume on re-created sets.

Shiprocked
Embarks: January 16, 2017
Carnival Victory
Eastern Caribbean
For those who like their music current, head to sea to hear Breaking Benjamin, Papa Roach, Alter Bridge, Seven Dust, Pop Evil, and a bunch of other popular bands. The Shiprocked cruise sails from Miami to Grand Turk.

Rock Legends Cruise V
Embarks: January 17, 2017
Independence of the Seas
Western Caribbean
Pat Benatar, REO Speedwagon, and Todd Rundgren are among those gathering for this year's four-day music festival at sea on Royal Caribbean's Independence of the Seas. You can also book now for the 2018 Rock Legends Cruise VI, headlined by Sammy Hagar and Bad Company.

NASCAR The Cruise
Embarks: January 29, 2017
Norwegian Pearl
The Bahamas

Join Richard Petty, Rusty Wallace, and Bobby Allison on the first-ever NASCAR cruise, a five-day Bahamas sailing embarking from Miami on January 29. Dale Earnhardt Jr. will also make an appearance. Fans will have the opportunity to check out real racing cars and virtual racing simulators and catch performances by The Beach Boys and 38 Special.

Walker Stalker Cruise
Embarks: February 3, 2017
Norwegian Pearl
The Bahamas
Fans of the AMC TV show The Walking Dead will gather at sea with the stars, including Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) and Chandler Riggs (Carl Grimes), plus the show's impressive makeup artists, for a three-day zombie cruise out of Miami. Yes it's creepy ... that's the whole point.

The Big Nude Boat 2017
Embarks: February 5, 2017

Carnival Pride
Eastern Caribbean
Wanna get naked? Sign up for the preeminent nudist cruise, hosted annually by Bare Necessities. Special events on the Eastern Caribbean sailing include a nude Super Bowl party on embarkation day. This nine-day cruise embarks from Tampa and ends on Valentine's Day.

The 27th Forbes Cruise for Investors
Embarks: March 7, 2017
Crystal Symphony
Asia
Cruise for two weeks to Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam while picking up tips for improving your portfolio. "Forbes Magazine"'s annual cruise is hosted by publisher Rich Karlgaard and Forbes Media chairman Steve Forbes, with leading analysts onboard too. The 2017 cruise is being held on luxury line Crystal Cruises' Crystal Symphony, embarking from Singapore for Hong Kong.
