The line's eponymous luxury vessel has made Papeete, Tahiti, its homeport since it began sailing the lagoons in 1998. Owned by Pacific Beachcomber, which operates luxury resorts in the region (including The Brando, the eco-friendly getaway on an island once owned by actor Marlon Brando), the line focuses on the South Pacific. Paul Gauguin Cruises is selling its second vessel, Tere Moana, in May 2016.

What We Love

Intimate Setting: The Paul Gauguin accommodates no more than 332 guests in an all-inclusive cocoon. With one crew member for every 1.5 passengers, the service levels are high.

New Itineraries: The line has started sailing to South Pacific destinations outside of French Polynesia in recent years, including Fiji.

Best Known For

A Close Partnership With a Cousteau: During summers and holidays, the company offers the Ambassadors of the Environment Family Program developed by Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of the famed ocean explorer. Cousteau also sails on the Paul Gauguin as a guest lecturer fairly regularly.

Who It's Best For

Lovers: Les Gauguines, the ship’s Tahitian hostesses, hold a Polynesian blessing ceremony for honeymooners and those celebrating an anniversary.

Don't Say We Didn't Warn You

Anticipate a Quiet Atmosphere: Don’t expect all the bells and whistles of the megaships. There is no late-night disco, rock-climbing wall, or water slide.
