SeaDream I

Our Ship Review
Deal Expert / Travel Blogger

SeaDream I is one half of the pair of identical small ships operated since 2001 by SeaDream Yacht Club. This 112-guest ship, which was built in 1984, a year before its sibling, SeaDream II, offers an upscale but decidedly casual ambiance best exemplified by the weekly Champagne and caviar party on the beach. SeaDream I sails primarily to lesser-known sun-kissed ports in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, but no matter where you are the service is exemplary. Plus, a multi-million-dollar refurbishment in 2022 updated the staterooms and other interior décor and added a new teak deck and two forward-facing Jacuzzis.

What We Love

Free-Flowing Wine: Practically everything’s included, including gratuities, 24-hour room service, water toys from the retractable marina — and, best of all, half a dozen wines to choose from at mealtime.

Sleeping Under the Stars: One of SeaDream’s signature experiences for couples is a night sleeping under the stars on one of the Balinese day beds on the upper decks. Reserve one and housekeeping will make up the bed with sheets, pillows, and a blanket — and if the fresh sea air and other ocean sounds aren’t to your liking, you can always hightail it back to your stateroom.

Best Known For

Carefree Camaraderie: This small ship is meant to feel more like a yacht then a large cruise ship, and the atmosphere feels very laid back. The dress code is also very casual — pack sandals and open-collared shirts, not heels or ties.

Impressive Cuisine: Dishes meld the flavors and ingredients of many cultures. You can have ratatouille or pad Thai for lunch, and then homemade truffle tagliatelle or New Zealand lamb lollipops for dinner. There’s always a vegetarian option as well as vegan "raw" selections.

Who It's Best For

The Well-Heeled but Down-to-Earth: SeaDream I is great for couples who appreciate luxury and top-notch service but fear pretension.

Don't Say We Didn't Warn You

Cabins Don’t Have Balconies: If you enjoy retreating to your private outdoor balcony you’re out of luck on this intimate ship. All staterooms and suites feature ocean views — but solely through the windows.

You'll Need to Entertain Yourself: Don’t book this ship for a casino (it's tiny), Broadway-style shows (they don't offer them), or late-night discos (nope). After-dinner options include conversation over al fresco drinks or in the tiny Piano Bar or the Top of the Yacht Bar.
