Silver Discoverer

Our Ship Review
Deal Expert / Travel Blogger

Editor's note: This ship is now part of CroisiEurope's two-ship ocean fleet as MV La Belle des Oceans.

---

The latest vessel to join the luxurious Silversea line’s expedition fleet brings decadent accommodations and service to some of the most remote and fascinating destinations in the world. The focus here is almost exclusively on the destination, as there is really not much to do onboard but eat delicious food in one of two dining rooms, take in a lecture at the one lounge, get a massage, or read a book. Of course, these are all pleasant respites between the all-inclusive excursions ashore. On shore days, the 120 passengers take pontoon boats from a convenient platform at the ship’s stern for adventure landings and scenic cruises guided by an expert team.

What We Love

Top Cuisine: The cuisine onboard is spectacularly good, and that’s no small task considering the galley is small. Selections aren’t as extensive as on other ships, but what is on the menu is almost always well crafted.

The Aft Terrace: The terraced decks over the stern form a relaxing enclave for enjoying al fresco dining, swimming in the pool, and sightseeing in warm climates. In the evening, the grill here serves up a marvelous “hot rock” dining experience where guests cook their own meats on a volcanic surface.

Best Known For

Wondrous Itineraries: From the Aleutian Islands of Alaska to the Kimberley Coast of Australia, this small ship gets around to exotic locales that the typical cruiser (and traveler) will never see.

Who It's Best For

Adventurers With a Penchant for Luxury: Discoverer is best suited to affluent guests who aren’t afraid to let their hair down by day but still expect the best creature comforts by night.

Don't Say We Didn't Warn You

The Ship Moves a Lot: Even though the vessel has stabilizers, they are very small and nearly ineffective at calming the sometimes dramatic pitching, rolling, and yawing of this small ship. Nonetheless, the ship is built like a tank and remains safe in rough seas.
