Silver Explorer

Our Ship Review
Deal Expert / Travel Blogger

Editor's note: This ship is no longer part of Silversea's fleet.

---

Silversea’s Silver Explorer, a 132-passenger vessel, was the first ship to incorporate luxury into expedition cruising. The cabins are all suites ranging from 180 to 600 square feet. And they all have views of the water, from two portholes up to a private veranda. It’s an all-inclusive ship, so beverages (including alcohol), gratuities, and specialty dining are included in the fare. So are shore excursions, snorkel equipment for warm-weather destinations, and expedition gear for cold-weather locales.

What We Love

Butler Service: All suite categories include personal service, a refrigerator and bar setup stocked with your choice of beverages (restocked as needed), and luxury Bulgari toiletries in the elegant marble baths.

Talk the Talk: Lectures and briefings comprise the majority of onboard activities. Experts in various fields socialize and dine with guests, sharing their knowledge of the destination’s historical, natural, and geologic high points.

Best Known For

Ice Rating: The ship has a Lloyd’s Register 1A ice rating, the highest attainable. This allows the ship to glide safely and effortlessly through ice floes during polar sailings.

Zodiac Excursions: The small ships are used for fascinating trips like walrus-watching. This being a luxury ship, strawberries and Champagne are also served during Zodiac excursions in polar regions.

Who It's Best For

The Environmentally Conscious and Worldly: These cruises are ideal for cerebral nature lovers and adventurers who have a taste for luxury and locales that are off the beaten track.

Don't Say We Didn't Warn You

Education Comes First: This is not for those seeking a party atmosphere. Lectures by experts in fields relevant to the particular itinerary provide the main entertainment. You also won’t find a swimming pool, a casino, a Broadway-style theater, or an elaborate spa and fitness facility on board.

On and Off: While Zodiacs allow guests to get up close to flora and fauna, boarding them may be a challenge for those with mobility issues.
