Star Legend

Our Ship Review
Deal Expert / Travel Blogger

Built in 1992 as the all-suite, all-inclusive Seabourn Legend for Seabourn Cruise Line, this ship was at the time one of the most luxurious cruise vessels in the world. In 2013, the now-seasoned, somewhat tired ship was sold to Windstar Cruises and after a refresh was renamed Star Legend (along with its former Seabourn fleetmates Star Pride and Star Breeze). In 2021, the ship underwent a major transformation as part of the cruise line’s $250 million Star Plus Initiative that lengthened it, refurbished all suites and bathrooms, and added 50 additional suites and new public spaces that include two new dining venues. Today, the refreshed 312-guest Star Legend looks pretty good for her age.

What We Love

Culinary Focus: As the official cruise line of the James Beard Foundation, Windstar takes pride in its culinary focus and brings chefs onboard select theme cruises. Even on regular sailings Star Legend’s chefs lead guests on shore excursions to markets while the ship’s five dining venues (all complimentary) endeavor to focus on local and sustainable menu selections. Like its Star-class siblings, Star Legend features two new restaurants: Cuadro 44 by Anthony Sasso for modern Spanish cuisine and Star Grill by Steven Raichlen for grilled and barbecued favorites.

Complimentary Treats: The line is known for offering several complimentary experiences, such as its elaborate deck barbecue or a performance by local singers and dancers. In addition, fares include all nonalcoholic drinks, from bottled water to sodas and specialty coffees.

Appealing Deals: Promotions offering free onboard credit are common, as are deals eliminating or greatly reducing the single supplement, so solo travelers can cruise without paying the double occupancy rate.

Best Known For

Roomy Suites: All staterooms onboard are suites, and each measures at least 277 square feet. Guests rave about the walk-in closets and marble-clad bathrooms, which come with L’Occitane toiletries, double sinks, and both a tub and a shower.

No Jackets Required: You can leave the fussy duds at home, though most passengers still dress elegantly in nice pants and shirts, or dresses.

Who It's Best For

Couples: Mature duos age 40 and older like the luxurious, roomy cabins and the casual-rather-than-formal onboard ambiance.

Small-Ship Lovers Looking for Value: Star Legend cruise fares are cheaper than those of small-luxury ship options such as Silversea, Seabourn, and Regent. That’s chiefly because Windstar is a premium, rather than luxury, cruise line. Also, wine and spirits aren’t included in the base fares — but beverage packages and “All-In” packages (which also include Wi-Fi) are available.

Don't Say We Didn't Warn You

“French Balconies” Aren’t Balconies: Let’s just call them what they are: sliding glass doors with a ledge and a railing. About 60 of the suites have them, and the others have windows.

The Pool is Small and Sometimes Shaded: Two imposing smokestacks flank the petite pool that, unfortunately, doesn’t always see the sun.
