Star Pride

Our Ship Review
Deal Expert / Travel Blogger

Windstar Cruises expanded beyond its signature sailing ships when it christened the Star Pride in May 2014. Part of a trio of “power yachts,” this sleek little vessel was built in 1988 as the Seabourn Pride. Today, it’s been elongated — 50 suites and additional public space were added in 2022 as part of Windstar’s $250 million Star Plus initiative — and updated to fit into the Windstar style of casual elegance with a focus on destinations and personal service. Along with its two Star Plus-class siblings, Star Breeze and Star Legend, 312-guest Star Pride offers spacious all-suite accommodations and more restaurant choices than Windstar’s three Wind-class sailing yachts.

What We Love

Dining Under the Stars: In the evening, the outdoor terrace of Veranda, the casual buffet eatery, is transformed into Candles, a romantic, reservation-recommended restaurant with no cover charge. Guests dine on grilled steaks and skewers, salads, and indulgent desserts. In addition, Star Pride features three other restaurants (all complimentary): the main dining room, Amphora; Cuadro 44 by Anthony Sasso for modern Spanish cuisine; and Star Grill by Steven Raichlen for grilled and barbecued favorites.

The Suite Life: At 277 square feet, even the smallest accommodations on Star Pride are spacious, with newly redesigned bathrooms. The sole caveat: Only the larger Classic and Owner’s suites have actual balconies. Balcony suites have sliders that open to a French balcony, so you can enjoy fresh air and a view, but you can’t actually step out onto it. Most suites feature just a window or a porthole, but are so roomy it’s not really an issue

Best Known For

Yacht-Style Ambience: From its small size — no more than 312 guests — to the sleek, modern crisp nautical décor, the Star Pride sometimes feels like a private yacht. Nowhere is this more evident than in the aptly named Yacht Club, an inviting lounge offering panoramic views.

Friendly Service: The small size of the ship means you get to know the staff — and, quickly, they learn your favorite drink and how you like your steak. This also is a rare ship with an open-bridge policy, so you can pop in to visit the officers while at sea.

Who It's Best For

Couples: Windstar attracts couples, generally aged 40 and older (although some itineraries are also popular with honeymooners) who want an understated yet social cruise experience on a smaller ship that can visit a mix of popular and lesser-known ports.

Don't Say We Didn't Warn You

Nights are Relatively Quiet: In the evening, guests enjoy low-key musical performances and light-hearted conversation over al fresco drinks. One thing is for sure: You won’t see a Broadway musical or avant-garde aerialist performance on the Star Pride.
