What to Do When the Port is Far from Townby Gayle Keck | May 20, 2016
1. Pick the right ship.
Smaller ships can squeeze into the more limited dock space close to town, versus large ships that can only be accommodated in more industrial ports. Azamara Journey is able to sail straight into towns like Seville and Bordeaux. And while Southampton is the port of call for most major cruise ships that list London as a destination, Silversea’s Silver Wind and Windstar Cruises’ Star Legend pass straight under Tower Bridge to dock on the Thames.
2. Check for a free shuttle.
Check in advance to see if there is a free shuttle available to passengers, either arranged by the port or the cruise line. If you are docking in Zeebruge, Belgium, you can hop a free shuttle for the 30-minute ride into Bruges.
