Anjodi

Anjodi is the star of an 18-strong fleet of small hotel barges operated by British company European Waterways. The intimate Dutch-style barge is lined with hardwood and brass, and accommodates just eight passengers and four crew members — a captain, a tour guide, a housekeeper/waitress, and a chef.

The striking-looking vessel's claim to fame was appearing in a TV cooking series with British chef Rick Stein, who cooked, ate, and drank his way along the Canal du Midi in the South of France onboard the ship. While the program first aired in 2005, it still runs on TV channels across the world, inspiring people to take the same journey.

What We Love

Intimate Atmosphere: It really doesn’t get much cozier than this. Anjodi has an outside lounge and dining area and an inside lounge where you’ll eat if the weather is bad ... but that’s it.

Impromptu Bike Excursions: Bikes are carried on board and can be used at your leisure at one of the locks that dot the canals. Just tell the crew when you want to go ashore, and you can board again at a lock further along when you’ve had enough.

Best Known For

All-inclusive Pricing: Once you've paid your fare, there's no need to dip into your wallet since drinks, food, and excursions are included. Note that gratuities are extra.

Striking Style: Anjodi is a real head-turner with her black, red, and blue hull adorned with plants and flowers outside and brass and dark wood inside — the very picture of a classic Dutch barge.

Who It's Best For

Sociable Retirees: You don’t have to be drawing a pension to love Anjodi, but the leisurely lifestyle suits those content to sit back and watch the world go by. (You can walk faster than she sails!)

Families and Friends: If a big birthday or anniversary is approaching, you can charter the whole barge for a six-night party, though it's not a great choice for children, who will find little entertainment.

Don't Say We Didn't Warn You

Cabins Are Small: Take as little luggage as possible because the cabins are cozy, to say the least.

Leave Formal Wear At Home: Casual clothing is fine at all times; there is no laundry service onboard.

It's a Quirky Experience: The relaxed style of this vacation extends beyond the dress code: When it’s time to go ashore, the captain will find a stout tree to tie up to. Think of it as a five-star experience rather than a luxurious way to travel.
